For the 4th of July holiday we headed up to camp. The term camp is most certainly a New England thing. Most of my California friends don’t understand what ‘camp’ is. Growing up, we either went camping or stayed in a cabin. Many people here have camps, which are usually three season vacation homes. Some are very nice, and some are much more rustic. People have camps on the ocean, lakes, rivers and deep in the woods.

Our family camp is on a small lake in Unity Maine. Small lakes are also called ponds here, so it is referred to by some as Unity Pond. A pond is bigger than what I grew up with. The lake is fairly big, but has so few boats on it that it feels like a private lake. It is the perfect place to relax. Camp is rustic, yet comfortable. You have everything you need for the perfect vacation, including an large selection of VHS movies. We lounged, floated, waterskied, practiced yoga, paddle boarded, kayaked, played games, and ate and drank a whole lot.

We had a lot of friends and family come and go over the holiday weekend. My friend Rachel stayed with us for the entire weekend, which was a fun dose of girl time and home. Mr. Man’s sister, brother in law, and niece were also visiting. We had nearly as many dogs as people. None of our dogs care much for loud noises (including fireworks and thunder) so the typical 4th of July celebrations were out, although we did have a campfire and made s’mores. The dogs may like camp even more than we do, it’s like an ultimate summer camp for them…swimming, playing with their friends, and plentiful table scrapes.

We were able to spend a full 4 days in the sun. The boat came with us up to camp, which was pretty amazing. I had the opportunity to learn how to drive it, on calm water with very little traffic. I must say, I am in love with our little boat. Here’s a look at last weeks adventures.

We completed our little stay-cation, by bringing the boat back to Casco bay, and having a swim in the beautiful salt water. Rachel got to see the best of Maine in the summer, from small country towns to picturesque coast lines. I love sharing how amazing this place is with friends. Feeling very blessed.

It has been a crazy week back at the deli, so I rely on the wonderful memories we made last week to get me through.
