Happy Memorial Day

This spring has been very late in Maine.  According to every farmer, gardener, and boater I have discussed it with, our season is running about a month behind. Due to this fact, we felt no guilt that our boat just made it in to the water on Saturday morning. We had a canvas dodger made this winter, and it’s installation set us back a few weeks. Last year our boat saw water in April, but it was also our first season and we were super eager to use it every chance we got.

We closed the deli for Memorial day this year, and although we probably would have been busy, our staff is so small it’s nice to give everyone an opportunity to have a long weekend before the season kicks in. We also wanted a weekend to breathe, as it has already been a hectic spring season for us, and will continue until our summer staff starts in mid June. We spent most of the weekend getting down and dirty cleaning the house. Organizing the basement and moving things around in preparation for some larger projects that we hope to tackle this summer, like our guest bedroom, roof and fenced yard.

We did get out on our boat for a few small trips to balance out the work, and I have to say, I LOVE our dodger. It is a game changer. I can curl up in it when it is cold and windy, and watch while my salty captain takes us through the chop. It wasn’t exceptionally warm this weekend, and I’m positive the dodger is the only reason I cared to be out on the water for more than a short cruise.

This is the first summer that I will be entirely on the east coast. While I  am sad that I won’t be making back to Cali, hopefully staying here will allow this to be a very productive summer for the house and deli. And once the temperatures cool down on the west coast, I can plan a long overdue trip home.  In the meantime, I am keeping my fingers crossed for amazing boating weather. I think we earned it this winter.
