Lobster Boat Races

There are many things that are quintessentially Maine.

Lobster, lighthouses, working docks, breathtaking islands, moose and let us not forget the lobster boat races.

Each summer lobster boat races are held all over the Maine coast. If you ever have an opportunity to attend one (especially by boat), do not miss the chance. It is an awesome spectacle.  Crowds throng to the shores, and pile on boats. Many boats are decked out and it is a huge party on the water.

This is the 3rd year I have attended the Portland lobster boat races. I missed most of the actual lobster boats racing, due to flying in from Cali and being picked up by boat with all of my luggage in tow.

I caught the tail end of the races, which includes the Tug boat races. The Portland tug boats are huge. These are the boats that assist tankers in and out of the harbor, and watching them race each other is like nothing you ever seen before. After they raced they had push competitions, where they push each other to see which boat gets the upper hand.

Post67Image4Owning a boat and having the opportunity to get to know Maine from this perspective is something I highly value. The history of boating here is rich, and the entire economy is largely based upon the water.

Now it is time for me to get out on that water and enjoy this beautiful sunday, as it seems summer is fading away quicker than I would prefer.
